Anyone searching for an online first aid course in Canada is usually driven by one of two very different motivations, and confusing them causes most of the frustration in this market. Some people need a certificate that satisfies a workplace requirement. What the regulations actually require
Workplace first aid in Canada is governed provincially rather than federally. Ontario employers operate under WSIB Regulation 1101. British Columbia falls under WorkSafeBC, Alberta under the OHS Code, and Quebec under CNESST. Each sets its own thresholds for how many certified first aiders a workplace needs and at what level.
They share one requirement. Workplace-approved first aid certification includes a hands-on skills evaluation conducted in person by an approved provider. Ontario’s program was modernized in 2026 to align with the national CSA Z1210:24 standard, which is competency-based, meaning candidates are assessed on whether they can actually perform compressions, use an AED, and manage a scenario, not merely pass a written test.
The practical consequence is straightforward. If your employer, your regulatory college, or a job posting specifies a workplace-approved certificate, a fully online course will not satisfy it on its own. What does satisfy it is blended delivery: theory completed online at your own pace, followed by an in-person skills day with an approved provider. It works as pre-learning, letting you arrive at a skills day already fluent in the theory so the in-person hours go entirely to hands-on practice. And it works as maintenance. Certification runs three years in most provinces, but recall of the specific sequences degrades within months of a course. A short refresher partway through the cycle is genuinely worthwhile.
How to judge an online course
Four things separate a course worth taking from a certificate mill.
Current guidelines. Content should reflect the most recent ILCOR resuscitation guidelines and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada recommendations. Compression depth, rate, and AED protocols have changed over the years.
Honest length. A course that promises certification in fifteen minutes is not teaching anything.
Clarity about what the certificate is. A reputable provider states plainly what its certificate covers and where it is accepted, rather than implying universal acceptance.
Practice built in. Knowledge without rehearsal fades fast. Look for scenario work, not just video and a quiz.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself who is asking for the certificate. If the answer is an employer, a college, or a regulator, confirm your provincial requirement first and plan on a blended course with an in-person skills component. If the answer is nobody, and you simply want to be the person in the room who knows what to do, online training is the fastest and most affordable route to real competence.
